Fort Worth: Texas’ City of Culture

Our Hotel Near Fort Worth, Texas

The beautiful city of Fort Worth is commonly referred to as the ‘cultural gateway to the American West’. It covers almost 300 square miles and is the sixteenth most populous city in the whole of the United States, with a population of nearly 750,000. The city has a rich heritage, having been established back in 1849 as an Army outpost sitting along the picturesque Trinity River. Fast forward to the 21st Century, and the city still bears much resemblance to its original form, with beautiful architecture and museums that tell a fascinating story.

Best art in the world

If you are only staying in Fort Worth for a short amount of time, make sure you pay a visit to the Kimbell Art Museum. The gallery is considered by many experts to have one of the best collections of art in the world; although it consists of fewer than 350 pieces, these works of art are considered of extraordinary levels of importance to art history. The collection is housed in a beautiful and architecturally important building; a series of distinct grey concrete arcs.

A hive of activity

Sundance Square, situated in the heart of downtown Fort Worth, is a hive of activity. Considered by many as the heart of the city, there is always something going on to entertain visitors. The square is full of bars, restaurants and quirky shops, many of which are totally independent and unique to the city. Must-see attractions in the square include the Bass Performance Hall, which hosts some of the city’s best theatrical and musical performances. Also, take a visit to the amazing Flying Saucer, a fun and intriguing bar that is full of local and international beers to sample. In the night time, Sundance Square turns into a living party; much of the city’s nightlife focuses around this point. A trip to City Streets nightclub is a must for those that like to boogie!

Delightful riverside entertainment

The banks of the Trinity River are brimming with entertainment and life. Running alongside the water are miles upon miles of biking and hiking trails, which take you on a journey from peaceful countryside to sprawling urban life. The Panther Island Pavilion is a central point for visitors; from here you can hire bikes, as well as book yourself into a whole host of other activities such as stand-up peddle boarding, kayaking, boating and water skiing. There are often also live music performances on busier days and evenings – providing entertainment to those on the water and beside it.

Historical education

To find out more about this city’s impressive history, head to the Fort Worth Museum of Science and History, in which you will find the Cattle Raiser’s Museum. This unique and interactive exhibition displays ranch life in the Old West, and was set up by the Texas and Southwestern Cattle Raisers Foundation. Visitors can enjoy a real ‘cowboy’ experience through hands-on exhibits, talking dummies, and theatrical performances. This museum is a real gateway into the old days of cowboys and the infamous Texas Rangers.

Spooky experiences

For those after something a little more terrifying, Hangman’s House is the perfect place to head. Locals and tourists alike are fascinated by this supposedly haunted house, and the building is a dedication to all things supernatural. Visitors can enjoy a classic tour of the house, which legend has it is home to Hezekiah Jones a.k.a the Hangman; this includes a 3-D Wonderland, The Labyrinth and McDagenville. There is also plenty of other entertainment, from live music, great food and even a Euro bungee!

Man made gardens

Finally, be sure to head to the Water Gardens – an amazing man made creation that spans over 4.3 acres across four blocks in downtown Fort Worth. The beautiful botanical gardens contain over 500 types of plants and, as such, is an extremely popular place for people to come and escape the hustle and bustle of city life. Often considered the ‘crown jewel’ of Fort Worth, the gardens contain many peaceful walking routes, as well as several great spots for a lazy afternoon picnic. Due to its astounding beauty, it is also a popular venue for weddings and events.
